Songs are fun, just not sure how effective they are in helping the learner remember new vocabulary.
My 3 main issues with learning a language through songs are:
1. Songs have relatively poor grammar -- for song lyrics grammar takes a back seat to rhyme;
2. Songs lack in context -- it’s not a dialogue. Song lyrics are in the form of a monologue, there isn’t much context. It’s not something we can easily use in a real life situation;
3. Song melody and language melody are two very different things. When I say that language is music, and when I say that there is a difference between the melody of the British and American English, I don’t mean the Beatles and and Beyonce. It’s a different type of melody. Without that sense of rhythm you can never master English.
