We've all heard the phrase THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH communicating the idea that it is impossible to get something for nothing, get something for free.
The idea of NO FREE LUNCH is used in economics to describe Opportunity Cost which is a key concept in economics. It refers to a benefit that a person could have received, but gave up, to take another course of action.
YOUR TIME is the is your most valuable resource, and the most SCARCE one. You can choose to spend your time watching "free" English learning videos on YouTube and learn nothing,
you could READ interesting books and texts and actually learn something.
The problem with all those free English learning videos on YouTube is that:
How long have you been watching English learning videos on YouTube for?
Sit down and calculate the time you have spent watching videos on YouTube so far. The average length of a YouTube video is about 7-8 minutes, how many videos do you watch a day ... and for how many months, years?
HOW IS YOUR ENGLISH?
You could have used all that time more effectively and efficiently and could have learned English by now. Could have gotten a better job with a higher salary, could have moved abroad - it is the opportunity cost of watching useless videos on YouTube.
TIME is money, use your time wisely.
You could either use it to passively watch YouTube videos, the easiest thing to do, with almost no benefit (the English in those educational videos is dumbed-down and gives a false sense of comprehension)
actively read texts and books you need for your job.
The best quality information on the Internet is in English. Learn good quality information through reading and a bit of listening (podcasts, TED talks) and learn English along the way.
READ, and I suggest you start with my book Virtually Native - the book before other books - which will give you structure and a working method for how to learn English.
